Katie came from a family of teachers, but she really learned the art of the profession from her life long experience as a student. This perspective gives her an advantage in structuring classes that best suited to students' minds. At the University of Toronto, where Katie received her first bachelor degree, she found delight in the wondrous world of life sciences, taking courses in human biology and biochemistry. After graduation, Katie decided to pursue another bachelor degree at the University of British Columbia. This time, her focus was the history of Germany, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union. During this period, Katie discovered an area of the discipline that is the history of science, technology, and medicine. Excited by the prospect of bringing together both of her specializations, she decided to work on a graduate degree in this field.
