Tutoring Services and Experience
Experience: I'm an experienced tutor, science communicator and educator with a PhD in quantum physics.

What I bring to tutoring:

I worked for several years in the Perimeter Institute's world-class physics outreach department, where I ran physics summer schools for high school students, gave public talks on physics, and helped produce several episodes of TVO's The Agenda with Steve Paikin and CBC’s Quirks and Quarks. As a result I understand what topics are most challenging to people new to physics and math, and how to explain them in a way that connects with what they already know.

My PhD and following research fellowship focused on quantum computation. Highlights of my research career included working with Nobel prize-winner Brian Schmidt, and a stint as a visiting researcher at Caltech. I developed excellent communication skills through 7 published peer-reviewed papers and two theses. My students benefit from my experience of what it's really like to do science, helping them see the bigger context to their studies.

In addition to my science career, I am experienced in connecting math and science to technology and the arts through running a festival of art and science for 3 years, and my current role as Director of the Toronto Mini Maker Faire (a hands-on festival of tech, creativity and innovation).

How I tutor:

I have 5 years tutoring experience from grade 6 to university. I am a genuine people-person, and enjoy helping students improve and find their confidence.

My fundamental goal is to help my students get to a point where they no longer need my help! This means three things:

(1) Bringing the student up to speed on topics they have missed or not understood. I also connect the ideas of physics and math to the broader world, so that there’s more to it than just memorizing and obeying abstract, unmotivated rules.

(2) Helping my students with their particular challenges, which may ultimately be nervousness in tests or a difficult relationship with a teacher. Finding solutions to these problems is just as important as understanding the content. For example, I help many students with simple techniques to avoid their most common mistakes when they’re under the pressure of a test.

(3) Building confidence and independence. As my students gain knowledge of the basics concepts, I encourage them to figure out their own approaches and gain confidence in their ability to solve their own problems without my instruction.

As a female physicist, I can especially be a role-model to for young women in physics and math, fields that are still dominated by men.

I provide quiet tutoring space in my home.
