Students spend a lot of time online, trying to learn or be productive. When it comes to utilizing the resources of the World Wide Web, the material available is vast, potentially unreliable, written at different comprehension levels, and often irrelevant to what a student needs to learn. And learning is not just about finding good content, but also how that content is traversed. To address these challenges, we are launching Knowillage.com on November 1, 2012, with our first material aimed at BC Science 10 students in their preparation for the provincial exam – all free of charge.
When a student chooses a topic to learn or review, Knowillage will assemble a study path for the student, leading them through the best content in the system for teaching that specific topic. We’ve been working with a team of teachers across the province to find a large collection of materials that is both factual and age-appropriate for content and language, and this collection will continue to grow as teachers and experts identify more material. This means that while there is still a large amount of content available, everything is relevant for high school students – a great improvement over what a standard search engine would provide.
We’ve also assembled a huge pool of questions, modeled on questions asked on the provincial exam, to let students test their knowledge of the material. When viewing any page of content, any number of practice questions can be requested until the student is comfortable they’ve understood the concept. If the question is incorrectly answered, targeted remedial material will be recommended.
At any point, the student can ask for a practice test for the topic. Based on the results of this test, the student can see that they either understand the material or need to spend more time on it. When a student returns to a topic after taking a test, the system will adjust their study path, tailoring it specifically to address the areas in which the test showed the student to be weak. The student can continue this study/test cycle for as long as they need until they truly understand the topic. This is particularly helpful in the intervention and remediation programs, but also for enrichment and supplemental educational programs.
Knowillage provides the flexibility for students to set their own goals, as all students have their own idea of what success is. Students are also provided with a progress indicator to give them confidence in knowing when they’ve achieved this success and are ready to move forward to the next lesson.
If material is either a level above or below a student’s comprehension, it is difficult for a student to be engaged, and easy to get discouraged. While regular textbooks provide the exact same content to every student, Knowillage adapts to provide an online textbook specifically created for students for that particular moment in their learning, with that learning reinforced by practice questions and tests.
What sets Knowillage apart from other intelligent tutoring systems is that it tracks what content works and offers that to other learners, taking advantage of these previous paths and experiences, while still catering to individual level of previous understanding and knowledge. The more students use Knowillage, the better Knowillage is able to identify the best content available.



In our recent field trials with K12 students in British Columbia, Knowillage was found to be very effective in identifying the areas for improvement and offering the exact content and path to remediate those areas.
Knowillage was founded by a team that has been working in educational technology for over 12 years. We saw an opportunity to change the way we approach learning, and we have used that experience to build a patent-pending technology that powers Knowillage. The application has been field tested in K12 trials in British Columbia, and is currently offered as a pre-release for selected public and private schools in BC.
