Symbols offers individualized writing, reading and math tutoring for students. They take a multisensory approach, meaning instead of just relying on one sense, lessons are reinforced using visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic techniques, which is effective, active and fun for the student. Their tutoring is based on the Orton-Gillingham methodology – a phonics-based multisensory method of teaching that is systematic and sequential.

“We help children with a wide range of learning needs, including children with ADHD, dyslexia, high-functioning autism—even students identified as gifted,” says Kimberley Wahl, Symbols’ co-owner and director of education. “After a thorough diagnostic assessment, we customize lessons to a student’s needs. We don’t worry about grade levels or what a student ‘should’ know, we start with where a student is, and work on the basics first.”

Statistics show that 35 per cent of students with learning differences drop out of high school, and early intervention is key. Many families have trouble finding appropriate programs for their children,kids are struggling in school and parents know they need additional help, but they don’t know where to turn. Symbols can fill that gap with one-to-one tutoring for students.
