Tutoring Services and Experience
I have a BSc, BEd, and am presently working on my Masters of Mathematics for Teachers. I have been teaching high school, and been tutoring privately for over 7 years, and as such I have developed a thorough familiarity with the current Ontario curriculum.
As a student, I worked as a teaching assistant for Calculus, where I learned there was an overwhelming gap in fundamental skills in first year engineering students. As a high school teacher, I sympathized with struggling students who lacked practice in basic operations, yet were being asked to solve complicated equations. As you may have read recently, the Canadian curriculum has flaws which have led to a math deficit nationwide. Below is one such article in the Globe and Mail, following the failing scores on the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment – a sweeping measure of scholastic abilities in 65 countries .
I offer tutoring to not only improve grades within the current structure of mathematics education, but I offer supplementary skill-building exercises to prepare students for high school, university, or to improve functional numeracy in day-to-day life. As a change in math curriculum is quickly approaching in response to the alarmingly low scores, it is important that we give our students a chance to improve their numeracy outside of the classroom, with the guidance of an experienced math teacher (and enthusiast).
I am presently offering instruction to students in the east end of Toronto.
