Tutoring Services and Experience
To avoid the many problems traditional tutoring classes tend to have, we have developed an educational system which gives each student complete control over the speed and order of instruction as well as the amount of practice. This system also avoids communication problems by providing much one-on-one instruction, and it helps the student examine his/her own study habits and/or progress in learning by giving immediate feedback. Here is how it works:

1. Diagnostic Test

Each course offered in our system is divided into 30 to 60 different “learning outcomes”, or knowledge points, much like how a teacher divides the course into topics so he/she can teach one topic per class. When a student wants to start a course with us, we have him/her do a diagnostic test that includes all the learning outcomes of that course with no time limit and no outside help. The purpose is to help the student find out specifically what he/she already knows and what he/she still needs to learn. Once both we and the student have recorded the results, the student can start booking appointments with us to learn the learning outcomes he/she wants to learn at
http://www.dandelioneducation.ca/cgi-bin/reserve/apptsched.php.

2. Appointments

When booking an appointment, the student needs to tell us the course and the code of the learning outcome that the student wants to study. For each appointment, we prepare a two-part quiz, time for one-on-one instruction with the student, and suggested practice problems. One part of the quiz would be on the learning outcome the student requested, and the other would be review questions from one of the learning outcomes the student already mastered from the diagnostic test or from previous appointments. For each part, if the student has any mistakes in the solution, the teacher would go over the possible misunderstandings with him/her, or even teach the learning outcome from the beginning. There is no time limit to the appointment, and the student is welcome to come early or stay after the appointment to work on practice questions as long as we are open. For the ease of transportation, the student is also welcome to book more than one appointment per day provided that they are not on the same learning outcome and are at least half an hour apart to allow time for doing the quiz and having the teacher go over the solution.

The courses we are currently offering includes:
Foundations and PreCalculus 10
PreCalculus 11
PreCalculus 12
Calculus 12
AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus BC

Teacher Background: Nora spent her elementary school years in Mainland China. She was selected and trained as one of the school’s math Olympics participants over her senior elementary school years and won numerous awards from local and national level math competitions, including the First and Second Distinction Awards for the Hua Luogeng Cup and the Zu Chongzhi Cup respectively. Soon after she came to Vancouver with her parents, she joined David Thompson, one of the province’s best secondary schools for competitive mathematics, and continued the pursuit of her love for mathematics. She has been awarded for her performance in almost all major Canadian and American senior high school competition. Nora decided to become a high school math teacher in her Grade 10 year. She has been tutoring privately since Grade 11 and was the head coach of the school’s MathCounts team of Grade 8 and 9 students when she was in Grade 12. Nora graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science in 2008, and a Bachelor of Education majoring in Secondary Mathematics in 2009, thus obtaining her BC Teaching Certificate. In the following two years, she served on the committee of Canadian Math Challengers Society as Assistant Secretary and Student Volunteer Leader. In 2011, Nora started teaching at Wuhan Maple Leaf International School, and in her second year at the school, she became the Head of the Mathematics Department. During her headship, she designed and implemented the Math Fair event for all Math 10 and 11 classes and the Standard Based Grading system for all Math 12 and Calculus 12 classes. Seeing the benefit of this new system from the school results, Nora decided to make this grading system known in Vancouver.
