Tutoring Services and Experience
As a graduate of the Honours of Bachelor of Arts of Mathematics program at Wilfrid Laurier University, I have wanted to be an educator for a few years now. This is ever since I have begun tutoring in the Accessible Learning Centre as well as the Aboriginal Student Centre at WLU. It was these two experiences as well as being a Volunteer Research Assistant for the Reading Comprehension in Students Who Learn Their Second Language Masters Project that ignited the flame inside me to begin my career as a teacher. Through my personal experiences that have inspired me to pursue the teaching profession, I find that I refine my professional practice through ongoing inquiry, dialogue and reflection.
It is since I have begun tutoring in the Accessible Learning Centre as well as the Aboriginal Student Centre at WLU that I have acquired the ability to care for each student individually by asking them if their learning needs are being met and what I can accommodate in order to do so. While I have tutored, through my empathy, compassion and charm I have been able to talk to my students about which learning strategy is best for them, what time restrains are comfortable for them and what I can do to facilitate their learning process. Whether it is a student’s learning disability, need for more time to gather information, or assigning homework for them; I have learned that no student is the same and must be treated with a special type of care. Moreover, my experience as a Volunteer Research Assistant for the Reading Comprehension in Students Who Learn Their Second Language Masters Project is what refined my ability to more carefully analyze how my actions affected every child and how to accommodate my techniques due to every individual’s Spanish and English capabilities. As a result, depending on which child I was testing that day, in order for them to understand the questions I was asking them for the Research Test, I would either exemplify it by responding to it myself or by translating it from Spanish to English. This is one of the things I most enjoy about the teaching profession: the care, compassion and support that an educator can provide for a student to help them feel it is alright to learn at their own pace and in whatever way accommodates them. I am also very interested in improving my skills about instinctively learning which teaching style works best for each student and recognizing the signs or symptoms within them to help make the best decision.
Now that I graduated from the program of Professional Studies in Education at Niagara University, my passion and drive for education has only grown. Furthermore, working at Tutor Doctor and tutoring for them as well has opened my eyes to various techniques and methods in how to approach students and engage them in learning.
